LNH/NHL : arithmetics 101.

As the Habs opened their season against the Hurricanes of Carolina, goalie Cristobal Huet was guilty of a bad second goal.

No harm done, as the Canadien won in overtime?

Not quite : the bad goal gave the Hurricanes one point and therefore also cost the Canadien and all other Eastern Conference teams one in their standing versus the Hurricanes.

Only when April comes shall we know how bad this goal was.

In their next game, against the Maple Leafs, the Habs were leading 3-1 and cruising to victory when Huet again, then Markov, messed up to tie the game at 3.

The Habs would eventually lose in overtime.

Bottom line: the Canadien scored 1 point instead of 2 possible, the Leafs 2 points instead of the promised 0. No less than a 3 point differential between the 3 teams.

Sure, the Habs got 3 points out of 4 possible ones in their first two games, but so did their opponents. Little to brag about.
