Une bonne nouvelle!
Non, MSA n'est pas que persiflage et mauvais esprit. Le bon point du mois est distribué aujourd'hui, dernier jour dudit mois de novembre, à ... la NHL/LNH. Un nouveau calendrier, et une nouvelle formule, devraient voir le jour l'année prochaine. Six matches, au lieu de huit cette année, contre les équipes de la même section, quatre matches contres les autres équipes de la conférence, et dix-huit contre les équipes de l'autre conférence, et qui mieux est, match contre chacune des quinze équipes de l'autre conférence. Total: quatre-vingt-deux matches de saison régulière, comme cette année, mais une autre saveur! Bravo!
Si vous connaissez des originaux appréciant plus un septième match contre les Bruins, souvent à la saison de la sloche en plus, qu'un premier ou deuxième contre Vancouver ou Detroit, envoyez nous les! MSA saura, raisonnablement, s'accomoder.

Les béatifications sont généralement posthumes, celle de Carey Price semble entérinée à titre préeventif.
Peut-être conviendrait-il de même de l’introniser sur-le-champ dans le temple de la renommée, à défaut de retirer son maillot car: que porterait-il ?
Le gardien du Canadien ne compte pas en tout cas parmi les victimes de la fusillade de Toronto :

All predicted it would not last. All also predicted the Habs would not free fall as they had the past season.
Then, when the Habs lose two games in a row and return to earth, all forget what they said and press the panic button.
Because this is the media game and they live on it ? Because they have very short memories ? Or, more upsetting, because they did not believe what they said in the first place about the Habs not risking the same fate as last year ?
Worse, when you would expect a coach to calm things down as the going starts to get mildly rough, Carbonneau too seems to forget all that he said about the improved depth of the team and his increased comfort in his position.

On Monday November 26, eight weeks into the season, Carey Price has become the Habs’ best player.
Figures don’t lie, especially Pierre Ladouceur’s. Carey Price’s 7,8 outdistances by 0,2 his three closest followers : defenders Roman Hamrlik and Andrei Markov -do they deserve some of the credit for Price’s performance or does he make them look better than they are ?- and his soon-to-be back up, Cristobal Huet.
Pierre Ladouceur has managed the trick with utmost elegance, even affording the luxury and fair play to give Huet the top rating -7,7- for week 8, in front of the boy wonder himself -7,6-.
It is all so beautifully staged : only players who have participated in at least 25% of the games are eligible for the season-long standings ; Price had played in 9 games out of 23.

Croatie-Angleterre: quand c'est fini, ni, ni, ni, ni,
ça recommen-ence... Et plus qu'on ne le croit. Souvenons nous: La Croatie élimine l'Angleterre lors de la phase de poules de l'Euro 2008. Cela se passait il y a cinq (5!) jours. Humiliant pour ''les inventeurs du football'' et étonnant pour les fans locaux et les media nationaux qu'égare (aveugle?) une nette surestime des possibilités footballistiques de cette nation, l'Angleterre donc. Le week end dernier, tirage au sort des poules pour le Mondial 2010, dont la phase finale doit se dérouler, en théorie, en Afrique du Sud. Je sais, ça fait court comme répit. Et qui retrouve-t-on dans le groupe F de la zone UEFA? Andorre, mais aussi la Croatie et l'Angleterre! Et que lit-on ce matin dans The Sun, qui est au journalisme ce que la justice militaire est à la justice et la musique militaire à la musique? Une belle interview de Michael Owen, honnête footballeur anglais, qui déclare que ''pas un des footballeurs croates de l'équipe nationale n'aurait sa place en équipe d'Angleterre.'' Véridique... mais vraisemblable?

Starting at the Beijing olympics, Canadian medallists will receive a 10,000$ (bronze), 15,000$ (silver) or 20,000$ (gold) "bonus".
Athletes had asked for such rewards for years, but are quick to point out it is not about money : rather about recognition, financial that is.
Alex Rodriguez who just signed a 10-year 275$ (US, but still, it is money) million contract with the NY Yankees is in full agreement : "The only reason why we play this game, the only reason why I came to New York and the reason why I have unfinished business in New York is because we haven't won a world championship with me being here."
How refreshing.

Coup de chapeau!
Le rideau est tombé sur les éliminatoires de l'Euro 2008. Place au ''tirage au sort'' de la phase finale. Selon le principe des ''chapeaux'', on pourrait avoir des groupes, dont les 2 meilleurs sortent au terme de 3 matches, aussi équilibrés que:
Pays-Bas-Italie-Allemagne-France: groupe A
Autriche-Suède-Roumanie-Turquie: groupe B
Suisse-RTC-Portugal-Pologne: groupe C
Grèce-Croatie-Espagne-Russie : groupe D
Je doute alors que les 2 survivants, le terme est à-propos, d'un éventuel groupe A puissent aller plus loin qu'un quart de finale. Quant aux équipes du virtuel groupe B, je me demande si individuellement une seule pourrait sortir d'un groupe ''aléatoire''. Un classement par nation existe, pas extraordinairement cohérent, imparfait, certes. Mais on pourrait peut-être s'en inspirer pour choisir les têtes de séries. Il parait qu'au tennis on procède de la sorte.
Cela dit, ce classement procède de la FIFA, et cette compétition ressortit à l'UEFA. Querelle de barons?

Concours de lenteur pour l'euro 2008! Et le vainqueur est...
...la Russie, qui écrase Andorre, la 173ème au classement FIFA, 1 à 0. Dans le même temps, l'Angleterre, qui pouvait se contenter d'un match nul à Wembley, est battue par la Croatie. Adieu Euro 2008. Pourtant, la Croatie était déjà qualifiée, quel que soit son résultat en Angleterre. Alors, solidarité slave? Grosse bévue psychologique anglaise, l'arrestation pour vol à l'étalage d'un officiel croate à Gatwick, ayant motivé les croates? Ou encore, primes généreuses, et néanmoins légales, comme l'a statué la FIFA récemment, en provenance d'une tierce partie? Je pense qu'on y verra plus clair d'ici quelque temps. Mais le mal semble profond dans le football anglais, comme en témoigne en ''négatif'' l'effectif national dans les équipes de clubs de haut du tableau. Arsenal, M.U., Liverpool et Chelsea sont peut-être en train de tuer le foot dans leur pays. La formation de jeunes joueurs n'est pas rentable à court terme, et donc, pour des clubs astreints aux trimestriels devant des actionnaires que ne motive pas forcément la beauté du sport, la solution est le recours à l'importation de joueurs formés ailleurs. Cela dit, l'absence des supporters anglais dans la calme Suisse et l'agreste Autriche est assurément une bonne nouvelle pour les responsables de la sécurité de l'Euro 2008.

On ne se gène même plus!
Bientôt, le 2 décembre pour être précis, va se dérouler le tirage au sort de l'Euro 2008, organisé conjointement, l'Euro, pas le tirage, par la Suisse et l'Autriche. Comme pour toute compétition footballistique récente, le tirage au sort va être un peu ''arrangé'' pour en garantir l'intérêt, sinon l'équité sportive. Par intérêt, entendez celui des grandes(i.e. peuplées) nations, et plus précisément de leurs entreprises média respectives. Il sera donc cette fois-ci encore procédé par ''chapeaux'' regroupant les têtes de series, premier chapeau, puis équipes de deuxième, troisième et quatrième niveau, respectivement dans les deuxième, troisième et quatrième ''chapeaux''. Un groupe étant composé de quatre équipes, une de chaque chapeau. Les têtes de séries seront les pays organisateurs, Suisse et Autriche donc, le champion en titre, Grèce, et l'équipe ayant obtenu le meilleur coefficient(?) lors des éliminatoires. Jusqu'à il y a un mois, environ, le meilleur coefficient appartenait à l'Allemagne, tôt qualifiée, qui a depuis, et c'est pas de chance, perdu chez elle contre la République Tchèque, par 3 à 0 encore. Le meilleur coefficient est donc échu aux Pays Bas, qui, et c'est pas de chance encore, vient de perdre tout à l'heure contre la Biélorussie 2 à 1(grosse nation de foot, le Bélarus, comme chacun sait). L'Italie va peut-être hériter de ce qu'il faut bien appeler un bâton merdeux, à savoir cette fichue place de tête de série. Elle mène 3 à 0 à la mi-temps contre les Féroë chez elle. Alors pourquoi cette place de tête de série fait-elle si peur? Ou plutôt, pourquoi toutes les ''grosses cylindrées'' veulent-elles pouvoir rencontrer une des têtes de séries? Voici le dernier classement FIFA par nation, pour les équipes qualifiées ou en passe de l'être, ça nous aidera à y voir clair.

Abattue, battue
Comme un air de résignation, hier soir au Centre Bell. Ou alors, le Canadien pense obtenir en bout de course, en fin de saison régulière donc, le huitième rang dans l'Est, et d'ici là fait le plein de ressentiment en prévision d'un premier tour de série contre les Sénateurs, promis à la première place. La vengeance serait alors à la hauteur de l'offense. Autre possibilité: à quoi bon se casser le corps à contrer des Sénateurs en forme? Il vaut mieux se concentrer sur des objectifs réalistes, gérer sa fatigue, et penser en fonction des 82 matches de la saison régulière et de l'objectif ultime(vraiment?). Bon, je vais arrêter la fumette et le billard à 12 bandes; et éviter de noyer mon, petit, chagrin dans le Beaujolais Nouveau, qui, cette année encore...

Tennis : ATP-sponsored immorality.
At the ATP Shanghai Masters, the Bryan brothers did not enter the doubles competition.
Had the ATP, for the second time in the week, wisely followed MSA's advice and banned brotherly pairs ? I would say "yes", but I doubt it; time will tell.
In any case, the US twins' absence opened the door for Canadian Daniel Nestor and his partner.
Which partner ? That is the question.

Then, another candidate surfaced, Australian John Fahey, a former minister too, who seemed to wake up one morning with the overpowering desire to lead the crusade against doping.
Fahey had just seen the light. Such things happen.
As unexpectedly, Lamour blew a fuse and resigned not only from hsi candidacy, from the agency too : according to him, Fahey was the candidate for the countries which did not want to fight doping, i.e. the US and allies. An EADA should be created : European Anti-doping Agency.

According to "Le journal de Montréal", George Gillet attended his team's victory in Toronto against the Maple Leafs and his congratulations to young Carey Price, who had held the fort, were "very enthusiastic": the Habs' woner looked like "a father congratulating his son on graduation day".
The message was clear and well received.

He greedily seized it, pushed, it seems, by his power agent, Scott Boras, whose ego seems to humble even his clients'.
As a free agent, Alex Rodriguez, Boras said, would have satisfied himself with a 350$ million contract; he did not even care to mention for how many years...
The last three years of Alex Rodriguez's contract with the Yankees would have earned him a pityful 81$ million, 21 of them paid by his former team, the Texas Rangers.
It now appears Alex Rodriguez has resigned -or is about to resign- with the Yankees, for ten years and 270$ million.
If we are not mistaken, this means 27$ million per year or 81$ million for three years, with the only -slight- difference that the Texas Rangers shall no longer defray 21 of the 81$ million.

Is it a surprise ? Réjean Tremblay ("La Presse") and Jack Todd ("The Gazette") also do not share the same taste in men.
Last Monday, Réjean Tremblay boldly walked aout of the closet and confessed that Jim Popp was "too good looking". Otherwise, he would not be presently so criticised. And nobody would mind his driving a Hummer.
A couple of days later, Jack Todd described Jim Popp as a "short", "chubby" "nerd", the kind of guy meant to drive a Honda and to stick to it.
Unfortunately, according to Todd, Popp the nerd dreamt of being in the spotlight and fulfilled his dream by becoming the Alouettes head coach, while keeping his nerdy GM day job (and a few other titles which would make for a rather long business card and probably do make for a nice payday).
Then, the nerd changed, not just his car, but also his looks. He basked in media attention.
But the tale moral is : a nerd a day, always a nerd; Jim Popp was not meant for the spotlight, even less for the head coach position.
Worse for Popp, there is a second, shocking, tale moral : Tremblay and Todd are suddenly in agreement: the too good-looking nerd should say good bye to his coaching gig but remain the Alouettes' General Manager and return to the obscurity that suits him so well.
If he agrees to, he may be allowed to keep his Hummer and the media may still turn the spotlight on him at times if he promises not to waste more than one hour of their precious time as was the case for his season post mortem press conference.

Tennis : when MSA speaks, ATP pays attention.
ATP reacted promptly to MSA's opinion that the 2,000 US$ fine to Davydenko for his apparent lack of "fighting spirit" was ill-advised : the fine has been cancelled.
We welcome the ATP's wise decision.

Tennis : à propos de Davydenko.
L'ATP déclare la guerre aux matches truqués. Excellent.
L'ATP est toujours en guerre contre le dopage. Merveilleux.
Mais est-il judicieux, dans le contexte de cette seconde guerre, d'infliger à un joueur une amende pour manque de combativité ? Cela ne revient-il pas à déclarer la fatigue hors-la-loi sur un court de tennis professionnel ?
Et si la fatigue est déclarée hors-la-loi, peut-on crédiblement préetendre que le dopage doit aussi le rester ?
La nouvelle -et soudaine- guerre aux matches truqués ne prépare pas, espère-t-on, l'abandon de la première, et loin d'être gagnée, contre le dopage -même si le cheveu de Martina ne se drogue pas.
L'ATP est toujours en guerre contre le dopage. Merveilleux.

Je sais bien qu'un problème insoluble ou permanent cesse d'être, justement, un problème pour devenir une donnée, mais je ne peux m'empécher de m'émerveiller à chaque fois. Peut-être mon âme d'enfant. Sinon, un match bizarre; le genre de match qu'il vaut mieux gagner, si on veut éviter un mauvais goût dans la bouche en se couchant. Petit paradoxe en passant: la presse francophone encense Price alors que The Gazette lui mesure les compliments (même pas une étoile pour le match d'hier). Et quand Huet joue, c'est le contraire.

Retour vers le futur
Aujourd'hui, sur le circuit de Montmelo, un certain Schumacher, Michaël de son prenom, a signé un temps remarquable au volant d'une Ferrari 2007 ''configurée 2008'', c'est à dire sans anti patinage électronique. Bon, c'est vrai, lors de cette séance d'essais officielle, ni Hamilton, pris par son déménagement en Suisse, ni Alonso, en rade sur le quai RER de Viry-Chatillon, ni Raikkonen, disparu au fond d'un tonneau de cervoise nordique, ni Massa, porté manquant, n'ont daigné paraître, mais quand même! Voir une coïncidence entre la mise sur la touche de Jean Todt la veille et le retour de Schumacher( Michaël) derrière un volant le lendemain ne peut être le fait que de polémistes et autres personnes mal intentionnées. En tout cas, la Gazzetta dello Sport, il Corriere dello Sport et Tuttosport doivent se frotter les mains: ils vont vendre de la copie demain. Une manière de bien tenir sa presse nationale, de la part de Ferrari? Ou de remercier une servilité jamais démentie?

Tennis : harassing Davydenko.
Since he is under investigation for a suspicious loss in the second round of the Sopot tournament last July, Nikolay Davidenko has a hard time convincing that his court attitude is naturally erratic, and in no way influenced by the heavy betting of clairvoyant but dubious gamblers on surprise defeats of his.
Unfortunately, his pathetic efforts only earn him additional problems. In Saint-Petersbourg, he was fined 2,000$ for showing a lack of ardour in his straight sets loss against Marin Cilic.
In Paris, he came close to a similar sentence in his 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Marcos Baghdatis but, after a long discussion with the chair umpire, was eventually allowed to lose without having to pay additional price for it.
This is an intriguing situation. Should a minimal quality of play be expected on a daily basis from a professional athlete ? Should hockey players who do not show up for a game soon be fined ? By whom ? The NHL ? Their team ?
Shall a soccer player risk to be also yellow- or red-carded and fined for scoring a self-goal ?
But back to tennis. Players are not allowed to communicate with their coach during games. Is it the umpire’s role to stand-in for the coach and force a player, who has lost his concentration and is about to throw the game away, to return to his senses and his usual level of play ?
What if, further to his long discussion with the umpire, a reborn Davydenko had suddenly recovered and badly beaten Marcos Baghdatis ?
Would the Cyprus player have been allowed to file a complaint against the umpire for interfering with the game ?

Forbes magazine is much more optimistic, at least for the financial playoffs : the Canadien should be a shoe-in with a 283 US$ value, which puts him in 4th position among the thirty NHL teams.
Even better, the team value, calculated in US$, has increased by a staggering 23% in one year. If only the club on ice performance had improved by half that percentage.
Great news, indeed, which « La presse » was quick to print in bold ink : « fourth position », « 23% ».
The article nevertheless mentioned the Canadian dollar had appreciated by 28% versus the US since January 1.
So that, as expressed in loonies, the Canadien valuation actually decreased by 5% in one year ?
A much less impressive figure, but more in line with some of the team's games.
Admittedly, a good chunk of the loonie appreciation versus the US$ has happened in the past few weeks, probably after Forbes completed its research.
If Forbes evaluations were based on an exchange rate which showed a 15-20% appreciation in the Canadian dollar versus the greenback, then the value of the Canadien increased by a 3-8% range in local currency, which seems more realistic : the result of higher ticket prices in Canadian dollars and lower costs, as players' salaries are paid in US$.
Not surprisingly, the value of most Canadian teams expressed in US$ jumped over the past year : +24% for the Maple Leafs, +17% for the Senators, +21% for the Flames...
More surprising are the mediocre performances by the Canucks (+10%) and the Oilers (+8%) : in Canadian dollars, the value of these two teams would have plunged during the past twelve months.
Why ? No idea, but if two out of its eight Canadian teams are presently struggling, the NHL is truly in bad shape.
On the American side, some value increases are all the more impressive as they have nothing to do with a currency gain :
.Anaheim : +25% : have ticket prices doubled since the Stanley Cup win ?
.New Jersey : +31% : the new arena impact ?
.New York Rangers : +19% : the Drury and Gomez off -if not on, yet- effect ?
It would be worth studying the detailed figures behind the Forbes valuations : on their own, they make little sense, or at least explain nothing.
The Maple Leafs position at the top of the value ladder (412 US$ million) seems to indicate on ice performance does not matter for a team in a major hockey market.
The Anaheim jump in value seems to indicate exactly the opposite.
What of Vancouver ? The team improved, the value fell... Competition from other sports? Decreased attendance?
What of Nashville ? The team is the cheapest of the thirty at 143 US$ million, but still appears overpriced at it keeps bleeding red ink.
RIM Jim Balsilie was nevertheless ready to buy it for 225 US$ million -and, according to reports, promptly move it to Hamilton- and local businessmen, it appears, are about to acquire it for about 175 US$ million.
Do the new owners plan to recoup their investment by accumulating losses ? Apparently, they bet on a future increase in the team media rights.
Good luck, considering the NHL US TV ratings.

A much less impressive figure, but more in line with some of the team's games.
Admittedly, a good chunk of the loonie appreciation versus the US$ has happened in the past few weeks, probably after Forbes completed its research.
If Forbes evaluations were based on an exchange rate which showed a 15-20% appreciation in the Canadian dollar versus the greenback, then the value of the Canadien increased by a 3-8% range in local currency, which seems more realistic : the result of higher ticket prices in Canadian dollars and lower costs, as players' salaries are paid in US$.
Not surprisingly, the value of most Canadian teams expressed in US$ jumped over the past year : +24% for the Maple Leafs, +17% for the Senators, +21% for the Flames...
More surprising are the mediocre performances by the Canucks (+10%) and the Oilers (+8%) : in Canadian dollars, the value of these two teams would have plunged during the past twelve months.
Why ? No idea, but if two out of its eight Canadian teams are presently struggling, the NHL is truly in bad shape.
On the American side, some value increases are all the more impressive as they have nothing to do with a currency gain :
.Anaheim : +25% : have ticket prices doubled since the Stanley Cup win ?
.New Jersey : +31% : the new arena impact ?
.New York Rangers : +19% : the Drury and Gomez off -if not on, yet- effect ?
It would be worth studying the detailed figures behind the Forbes valuations : on their own, they make little sense, or at least explain nothing.
The Maple Leafs position at the top of the value ladder (412 US$ million) seems to indicate on ice performance does not matter for a team in a major hockey market.
The Anaheim jump in value seems to indicate exactly the opposite.
What of Vancouver ? The team improved, the value fell... Competition from other sports? Decreased attendance?
What of Nashville ? The team is the cheapest of the thirty at 143 US$ million, but still appears overpriced at it keeps bleeding red ink.
RIM Jim Balsilie was nevertheless ready to buy it for 225 US$ million -and, according to reports, promptly move it to Hamilton- and local businessmen, it appears, are about to acquire it for about 175 US$ million.
Do the new owners plan to recoup their investment by accumulating losses ? Apparently, they bet on a future increase in the team media rights.
Good luck, considering the NHL US TV ratings.

NHL/LNH : le bulletin chiffré politiquement correct.
Pierre Ladouceur, toujours lui, note chaque semaine chaque joueur du Canadien sur une échelle supposée aller de zéro à dix.
Pourtant, toujours dans le bulletin du 4 novembre, après une semaine au mieux moyenne du club, soldée par trois points sur six possible lors de matches tous joués à domicile, le joueur le plus mal noté, Mikhail Grabovski décroche malgré tout la note 6.
Quant à l’autre Michael, Ryder, dont le journaliste écrit qu’il n’a rien apporté à sa ligne, il a droit malgré tout à un 6,4 et Huet, malgré sa « pire performance de la saison contre Toronto » et une « performance ordinaire » dans la victoire contre les Flyers empoche un 6,5.
Questions : que faudrait-il pour qu’un joueur écope d’une note en dessous de la moyenne ? quelle note méritait le Canadien pour sa (non)prestation contre les Thrashers ? Un 3, un 2 ? Comment une équipe peut-elle mériter un 2 ou un 3 quand le pire de ses joueurs récolte un 6 ?
La presse québecoise se flatte parfois avec un peu de complaisance de, justement, son absence de complaisance et même sa cruauté envers les joueurs du Canadien quand tout ne va pas aussi bien qu’elle le souhaiterait.

Pourtant, Carey Price a emporté la tranche d’octobre de la Coupe Molson, qui récompense le meilleur du mois du Canadien.
Pourtant, dans le « bulletin global » où Pierre Ladouceur note dans « La presse », semaine après semaine, les joueurs du Canadien, Carey Price arrive en deuxième position, juste derrière Chris Higgins, avec une note moyenne sur 5 semaines de 7,8 sur 10 et Huet en sixième position avec une note de 7,5.
Après la brillante prestation de Price en fusillade contre les Penguins -aucun but accordé sur 8 tirs, dont certes la moitié hors du cadre, mais car il l’occupait trop bien-, des journalistes ont suggéré que, même si Price n’était pas le gardien titulaire du match, il rentre sur la glace pour toutes les fusillades.

Très joli match, hier soir, sur RDS. Ottawa s'amuse et exécute Toronto. Mais quelqu'un pourra peut-être m'expliquer pourquoi une équipe dominante, formée de joueurs rapide, talentueux et de gabarit plutôt faible, qui atomise une équipe lourde, lente et presque constamment sur la défensive, prend 3 fois plus de pénalité (9 en tout) qu'on ne lui en octroie(3 au total)? Et si c'était la première fois que l'on trouve que les Maple Leafs se font arbitrer étrangement! Autre pays, autre sport, autre environnement: La Juventus a fait un tour en Serie B pour moins que ça. Statistiques amusantes dans la LNH
Depuis quelques années, déjà, la saison régulière de la NHL privilégie les rencontres entre équipes de la même section, autorise les matches entre équipes de la même conférence et interdit quasiment les matches entre équipes de conférences différentes. Mais quid de l'équité sportive dans un tel schéma. Car on peut éventuellement rappeler que la saison régulière, 82 matches par équipe quand même, mène aux play-offs, ou séries d'après saison, qui seuls vont décider des honneurs. Il n'est donc pas inintéressant d'évaluer la ''force'' respective des sections, et de voir si cette ''force'' est corrélée aux résultats, bons ou mauvais, des équipes qui en sortent et disputent les séries. Un bon moyens d'estimer cette ''force'' est d'appliquer à chaque section la notion de ''goal-average'' ou bilan ''buts pour-buts contre'', en additionnant les bilans ''buts pour-buts contre'' de chacune des équipes la composant. J'ai colligé ces chiffres depuis la saison 2001-2002 jusqu'à la saison 2006-2007. Voici les résultats. On va les analyser . On pourra ensuite se livrer aux joies de la prospective en regardant les chiffres de la jeune saison 2007-2008.

Le monde enchanté de la F1
L'équipe Red Bull l'affirmait hier: ''on aurait bien fait signer Alonso, mais pour 2008, on a déjà nos pilotes, soit Webber et Coulthard. Et c'est d'autant plus dommage, qu'un double champion du monde sans contrat, c'est pas commun.'' Il semblerait pourtant que Webber ait un contrat permettant à Renault de l'engager, et donc de le piquer à Red Bull, sans compensation à tout moment. Lequel Webber a semblé supérieur au personnel pilote de Renault en 2007. Un peu de bras de fer, de la part de Briatore, pour montrer à Alonso qu'il n'aura le choix qu'entre Renault(pas une si mauvaise voiture comme en témoignent ''en creux'' les résultats de Fisichella) et Toyota(une vilaine brouette, comme en témoignent les résultats de Trulli et R. Schumacher)? Rappelons également que Red Bull est motorisée par Renault. Et qu'un champion du monde ne vaut pas un moteur. Les leçons de modestie que va recevoir Alonso ne sont peut-être pas terminées. Après tout, il n'est ''que'' pilote, c'est à dire un salarié.

More language controversy.
On last Monday, « La Presse » readers learnt, with possibly a perplexed frown, that Kyle Bush had won a race in the Nascar Craftsman series « sur une technicité ».
What is a « technicité » supposed to be ?
The French reader with a grasp of English probably traced the word back to the « technicality » likely mentioned in the original English language release.
The French reader with no grasp of English probably remained confused, despite the translator’s effort or, more likely, the automatic translation software effort to use an existing French word rather than invent « une technicalité ».
« Technicité » means in fact « technical expertise » and, according to the Larousse Chambers dictionary, can be used to translate « technicality », though not in this specific press release context, where the « technicality » rather referred to « un point de réglement ».
It would be great if Koivu spoke French, it would be even better if Francophone newspapers were published in their supposed language.

Year in, year out, the Canadiens captain is held hostage of the Québec language debate.
Québécois nationalists complain Koivu does not speak French, when they should instead be grateful he does not.
As they should be grateful Kovalev, Markov, Plekanec, Higgins and all the non native French speakers in the team do not.
If one language has to be butchered in the Canadiens dressing room, on the ice and during media interviews, better be it English rather than French.
The esperanto and lingua franca of the NHL probably bears very limited resemblance to Shakespeare’s, The Gazette’s, even Beckham’s and John Doe’s English and linguists would probably detect in it very strong North and Eastern European influences.
Any lover of the French language should be thankful that his own idiom be spared such debilitating and, in the long term, probably deadly treatment.
Better have fewer but better French speakers.

During his later Tours de France, Lance Armstrong made a point of answering French journalists in what was supposedly French.
It was amazing to hear how he could speak a language so poorly after spending so much time in the country, racing with many French speaking riders.
Why he insisted on inflicting such a beating to the language was then a mystery.
It has since become clear as, safely back into English and on the western side of the pond, Armstrong has repeatedly, fluently and articulately voiced his hate and contempt for the country and the people of which he had won the biking Tour seven times.

After a shaky honeymoon, newlyweds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic are happy to announce their first double title, at the Saint-Petersburg Open.

According to « Team Marketing Report », a Habs game at the Bell Centre for four people, including such perks as beer, soda drinks, hot dogs, two caps and more, will cost the family budget -if it is a family- 388,24 $US.
The figure is up 5,1% from last year and the second highest in the NHL behind the 476,02 US$ the same outing would cost in Toronto for a Maple Leafs game.
This is no small amount, but is the figure accurate ? According to the magazine, a beer at the Bell centre will set you back 5,90$ (US or Canadian ?), the real price would be 8,34$ (US or Canadian).
Besides, if the 388,24 $US figure shows a 5,1% increase from last year, it would mean the actual cost in Canadian dollars has dramatically decreased considering the Loonie has appreciated by more than 20% versus the US dollar since January 1, 2007 : obviously such was not the case, as the tickets prices increased in local currency.
The actual figure could therefore be even higher.
How can the Canadiens afford to charge such insane prices without creating a riot ?
Obviously, because enough « amateurs » can afford them. But who are they ? Hard core fans or corporate Québec or affluent happy few ?
How many season tickets are paid for by companies rather than individuals ?
How many people attend the Canadiens Games, because it is the place to be seen, and supposedly the best entertainment in town, as they would attend Broadway musicals -and certainly not Rangers Games- if they lived in New York ?
More importantly, how can hard core fans without the means to hand out such sums to watch their favourite team accept to be driven out of the arena without a remake of the Forum riot ?
Call it the RDS, or RDS/TSN miracle. For the Canadien bank account, it is a miracle which strikes twice : first, the sale of TV rights land the organisation a small yearly fortune ; second, by actually moving the affordable seats from the arena to private living rooms, RDS and TSN allow the club to inflate ticket and concessions prices without fully alienating its social basis : RDS and TSN cater to the club’s poor by « offering » them the games, at a fraction of the arena price, with beer and hot dogs at supermarket’s prices, in the language of their choice and now high definition.
The Centre Bell crowd is supposed to be boisterous and hyper critical. Is it really ? Maybe not, but this white collar public knows it is supposed to behave like a blue collar one, and plays its part as well and sometimes stupidly -Briére’s Montréal welcome- as the media have instructed him to. It cheers and boos, like it would -and may be does- offer a standing ovation at the end of a MSO concert, because it is the proper thing to do.
In Spain, the « socios » of soccer clubs are not just season ticket holders, they own a stake in their club and have collectively a say in its management, can oust a president and elect a new one.
In other European countries, even if the fans are not « socios », organised supporters groups often yield major political and financial power vis-à-vis the management, coach and players.
Under the new convention between the team owners and the players, the NHL is supposed to be run as a partnership between these two parties.
The partnership clearly is not meant to extend to the fans. In fact, it looks as though it is the only area where the partnership truly works : team owners and players are quick to agree on the back -or the wallet- of those providing for their globally rather high living.
« Let them eat cake » is out, but « let them watch RDS/TSN » is in. (P.M.)

Sports is full of stories of athletes who, struck by personal tragedy, shake it away by hurrying back to their game and play with heightened intensity and motivation to prove that no adversity can crush them.
No such thing happened last week after Anthony Calvillo learnt his wife suffers from cancer.
Such news is no doubt dramatic and, for the Calvillos, devastating. Anthony Calvillo could be expected to skip the last two regular season games and return to the Alouettes for the play offs.
Instead, the quarter back decided to call it a season, when the real season was only about to begin.
Strange decision. Calvillo is, after all, a professional athlete and paid accordingly : when a bank manager’s wife is struck with cancer, her husband is usually not given indefinite leave - whether paid or unpaid, this is not the central issue- to look after her.
Besides, the real season could have been a really short one for the Alouettes and Calvillo would have then been able to stay full time with his wife till next season training camp.
The decision may speak volumes about the atmosphere inside the team’s dressing room and each player’s commitment to the club : you are not supposed to let your team mates down.
But was it truly Calvillo’s decision ? He no doubt endorsed it, but did he originate it ?
If I am not mistaken, all communication regarding the starting quarter back’s decision was handled by the club itself.
Could it be -how to phrase it tactfully ?- that the consequences of Ms. Calvillo’s illness - though obviously not the illness itself- were received by the Alouettes management like the « force majeure » or « act of God » they had prayed for and could save, if not their season, part of their face ?
Were the Alouettes so convinced their season, with or without Calvillo, was going nowhere that they pressed their quarter back to stay with his wife so they could have the perfect excuse for a likely early play offs elimination : Anthony Calvillo did not play ; who knows if he had... ?
What a relief and what an easy way out for coach and general manager Jim Popp : what a perfect excuse to grant oneself one more season wearing two caps over one’s inflated scalp.
It remains to be hoped, for the fans and the players, if not the management, that Marcus Brady will beat the odds. And that Ms. Calvillo will prove her doctors’ optimism right. (P.M.)

The journalists smiled. Kovalev insisted he was not joking. I believe him. This is bad news for the Canadien and his threat should not be taken lightly.
In fact, the player’s candid statement explains everything. We now know why Kovalev does not show up for every game. If he wants to play till he turns fifty, he’d better spare himself. If he wants to reach the 2000 game mark, he’d better dress for every game, but not always show up.
This is Kovalev’s strategy : play 2000 NHL games but compete in only a few hundred and doze the others away.
So, do not be surprised if, after his uncharacteristic fast start, Kovalev soon awards himself a seasonal on ice break : the Artist warned you.

Ironie
Sur la page sport même qui nous indiquait comment et pourquoi le Maple Leafs gagnaient de l'argent(i.e. en perdant sur la glace), on nous racontait pourquoi les Red Sox avaient gagné leur deuxième ''Série Mondiale'' en 4 ans(i.e. en dépensant en coulisse). Glorieuse certitude du sport professionnel.
L'art du vide et du rien
Intéressant article dans The Gazette du 30 octobre dernier. Intéressant et instructif. Il traitait d'un sujet qui nous passionne tous, le sport, d'un autre qui nous concerne tous, le fric, et du rapport entre les deux, ce qui est quasiment la raison première de ce blog. Or donc, le MLSE, plus importante entreprise du ''sport-business'' du Canada, aurait engrangé un profit de 83 millions lors de son dernier exercice, clos le 30 juin 2007, pour un chiffre d'affaire de 383 millions. Marge nette:21.7%. Suit une courte, et amusante, liste des produits les plus rentables de cette entreprise.
Qu'est-ce que le MLSE? Tout simplement le Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Ce conglomérat inclus des puissances sportives du genre: Maple Leafs au hockey, Raptors au basket et Toronto FC au Major League Soccer. Mais les produits phares, ou vaches à lait, sont autres: raclures de Zamboni, cordages de filets de buts, billets pour spectacles fictifs, etc.
Cela a éveillé quelques réminiscences et déclenché quelques pensées dans mon cerveau anesthésié par le panem et circenses de ce début de XXI ème siècle.
-Au temps déjà lointain de mes études, je me souviens d'un cas de comptabilité analytique décrivant une entreprise vendant de ''l'air du temps'', dont la structure de coûts n'incluait que des coûts fixes et pas de coût variable. Ça jutait un max, cette boite. Las! Le professeur nous avait alors expliqué que ce genre de compagnie n'existait pas et n'existerait jamais. Et bien si, ce genre de compagnie existe, c'est le MLSE, car je ne peux envisager que les Maple Leafs, Raptors ou Toronto FC donnent, par exemple, des boni de performance à leurs employés et néanmoins joueurs. Et je ne pense pas que des raclures de Zamboni ou des cordages de filets de buts aient des valeurs comptables significatives et dignes d'entrer dans la catégorie ''coûts variables''. Les billets, eux sont vendu à Bay Street, car les fans ne peuvent plus se les payer. Là non plus, pas de coût variable(à part peut être le papier sur lequel ils sont imprimé). Il serait bien étonné, notre professeur de ''compta-ana'', et en tirerait peut-être d'humanistes conclusions sur l'invariabilité de la bétise humaine, une variable à ne pas négliger.
-En parlant de bétise, une analogie m'est aussi apparue. Vous vous souvenez du film ''Les Producteurs'' de Mel Brooks. Une histoire de spectacle qui ne peut être rentable que s'il foire, ou est annulé, et qui malheureusement pour ses producteurs, a beaucoup de succès malgré sa nullité absolue. Visionnaire, Mel Brooks? Prémonitoire, ce film? Pas réellement, en ce que le spectacle est certes mauvais et à néanmoins beaucoup de succès, mais profite pleinement à ses producteurs. Spring time for share holders in Toronto... Et pourvu que ça dure encore 40 ans!
