Tennis : ATP justice.
Famed Italian tennis players Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali were rightly suspended and fined by the ATP for betting on tennis games (though not theirs or they would have probably experienced Joan of Arc's fate.)
Potito Starace, 31st in the ATP ranking, was suspended six weeks and fined $30,000 for making five bets for the stratospheric total of 130$ two years ago.
Daniele Bracciali, ranked 258th, was banned for 3 months and fined $20,000 for 50 bets of $7 each.
Whaoooo!!! Big fish has been caught. Coming on the heels of the Australian Open decisionto create a hot line for reporting suspicions of match fixing, it is a clear message that the ATP means business.

What more can you ask ? No less than a "60 minutes" interview.
Roger Clemens shall clearly stop at nothing to prove his innocence beyond any reasonable doubt.
Still better than his YouTube video : a "60 minutes" segment, where he will be grilled by no less than Mike Wallace, a 89 year old veteran of the show and a good friend of Clemens's, which clearly makes him the best and most objective possible choice.
No risk of a tricky fast or curved ball and, at 89, a guy who can no doubt show understanding if you needed the odd steroids shot from time to time to keep going. Maybe his friend Roger provided him with some.

Quand les Panthers de la Foride sont obligés de patiner, ils sont agréables à regarder jouer. Au plan des résultats, ce n'est certes pas aussi probant. Mais enfin, compte tenu du nombre de partisans (?) qui emplit (re ?) ordinairement leur amphithéâtre, on peut douter que ce choix, patiner ou gagner, soit finalement si important. On peut également se demander si Jacques Martin, entraineur des Panthers, est animé de zèle missionnaire, ou au contraire ne se préoccupe que de son chèque pour oeuvrer dans un tel marché. Qui dira que le roi est nu? Qui prendra la décision de réduire le nombre d'équipes de la NHL/LNH à un total en rapport avec son impact médiatique et son réservoir de talents disponibles. La NBA et la NFL ont respectivement 30 et 32 équipes, et dans chacune des concessions on peut voir jouer un p'tit gars du coin. Comment imaginer qu'un sport confidentiel doive avoir autant d'équipes que des sports majeurs? Qui pense qu'un sport régional peut conquérir un public universel? Qui peut croire qu'un sport exotique, joué par des biélorusses et des finlandais, peut intéresser la population d'Atlanta? Bettman, peut-être. Mais aucun des grands réseaux.

Football (Canadian) : the right man at the right place.
The Montreal Alouettes have a new coach, Marc Trestman.
Fabio Capello does not speak English, Marc Trestman does not speak Canadian football, though he attended a three-day crash immersion course last spring with the Alouettes.
Marc Trestman nevertheless speaks fluent NFL, which should be more than good enough : if you could read Ovid in the original text, you usually needed little additional training to be able to go through the Mass in Latin.
Besides, some players, including Boulay and Proux, have enthusiastically endorsed the management decision : during the team last spring camp, Marc Trestman managed to keep them interested throughout his speech as guest coach, which lasted no less than ten full minutes.
No doubt a feat impressive enough to make him already eligible to the CFL Hall of Fame.

Pourquoi faire simple?
Plutôt qu'un Rapport Mitchell sur des joueurs de MLB ayant consommé, un ''Non-Rapport Mitchell'' énumérant ceux n'ayant jamais touché à ''ça'' aurait été plus productif; plus court aussi. Et même tellement court que cela en aurait fait un des rapports de commission d'enquête les plus succints, quoique fort signifiant, et les plus digestes, jamais écrits. Ce qui est encore plus drôle que ce fameux rapport est que nul ne sente le besoin d'en écrire un sur (cochez au choix une ou plusieurs réponses): La NHL/LNH, la NBA, la NFL. J'ai même lu sur The Gazette, de la part d'un comique que je ne nommerais pas, que la dope n'était pas un problème dans la NHL/LNH, car '' elle est étrangère à la culture des joueurs''.
Autre continent, même problème. En ce moment, un ex-entraineur de club de football (soccer, donc) italien de Serie A est inculpé pour la mort ''douteuse'' d'un ancien professionnel. Nom du footballeur: Bruno Beatrice, ancien joueur de la Fiorentina. Nom de l'entraineur: Carlo Mazzone, ancien entraineur de ce même club. Les soins pour la guérison d'une pubalgie, doses massives de rayons, auraient entrainé la leucémie fatale. La mort remonte à vingt ans, mais l'affaire a fini par faire surface...

It would be like shooting oneself in the foot: some fans might get upset at the doping revelations, some repurations might remain tarnished for ever.

Plus que le peu glorieux match des Canadiens hier soir, c'est le ton de RDS , et de ses commentateurs, qui va nous intéresser aujourd'hui. Attardons nous un instant, un instant seulement à cette équipe; les Canadiens ne sont pas aussi mauvais que leurs derniers matches le montrent, et pas aussi bons que leurs premiers tendaient à nous le faire croire.
Mais les attaques contre le talent, le coeur, la fierté des joueurs du Canadien par toute l'équipe de RDS laissent réveur. Cette chaine s'affranchirait-elle de la direction du Canadien?
Que non pas! On critique les joueurs, pas les ''hommes de hockey'' qui les ont repêchés, développés et entrainés.
Donc, stratégie de communication de la direction du Canadien, en passant par la ''voix de son maître'' RDS. Stratégie à l'égard des joueurs, et notamment ceux du premier trio, et notamment Koivu et Ryder, même si ce dernier n'en fait plus partie, de ce premier trio. Il fallait entendre, vers le milieu de la dernière période la prière, que dis-je la supplique, à saint Kovalev, pour une égalisation providentielle...Chance, elle est venue de son trio, après qu'on eût insisté lourdement sur son rôle, qui a permis de commencer l'attaque avec un bourrin (Lapierre, je crois) et de la finir avec un marqueur, Plekanec. En fait, seuls Kovalev et Plekanec ont échappé à la varlope hier soir. Stratégie à l'égard du public, ensuite. NHL/LNH : Le Noël des glorieux nécessiteux.
Once more, the Habs management had come up with a brilliant and generous idea : as the team would, once more too, be on the road for most of the holiday season, why not invite the players’ families to Florida where the team will play on December 26, so the players can enjoy a really warm family Christmas ?
Great concept unfortunately crashed by the salary cap : all gifts to the players’ families are forbidden, because they would amount to a way around the salary cap.
The players who were interviewed about the issue all sounded bitterly disappointed ; could it be that the cancelled family trip to Florida was the real reason behind the team slump ?
In any case, we are glad to point to the Canadien and particularly the players that the League can hardly prevent their families from travelling to Florida, provided they pay for their expenses.
If the players were so keen about the project, we think most of them can afford to go ahead with it.
Or was the idea really to cheat the salary cap ? Was Karl-Heinz Schreiber expected to fly down as Santa Claus and distribute cash bonuses ?

NHL/LNH : Esprit de décision.
Scott Niedermayer has eventually decided to return to the game. If we remember correctly -but it was such a long time ago-, he started pondering the issue of retirement in July -of this year, but still.
We thought he had forgotten all about it : it would have been a clear sign that his lack of decision was the right one. That he could think the matter over during six months demonstrates pedestrian but resilient thought processes.
It is also good he made up his mind before the season is over.
His team mates will now hope his on-ice decisions remain as quick as ever.

Je ne sais pas vous...
...mais moi, je n'y comprends plus rien. Je vous parle de F1 et d'espionnage. Un petit rappel de ce que faute de mieux nous appellerons les faits. McLaren espionne Ferrari; on trouve des preuves grâce à une ''transaction'' avec des pilotes; lesquels se font récompenser en ne perdant pas leurs points de championnat du monde; lequel, championnat, se termine par la victoire très inattendue de Raikkonen, pilote Ferrari; McLaren est condamnée à une amende de 100 millions de dollars lors d'une réunion, à huis clos, à Paris; on sait que cette équipe ne paiera pas la totalité de l'amende, on parle de 50 millions; là dessus McLaren accuse Renault de l'avoir aussi espionnée; on trouve quelques preuves, mais beaucoup moins que ce que McLaren annonçait; Renault fout dehors un coupable (bouc émissaire?), ancien de chez McLaren (tiens, tiens); et lors d'une autre réunion à huis clos, à Monaco, celle-ci, on dit que Renault est un peu coupable, mais pas trop, et que cette écurie ne sera pas sanctionnée; Alonso peut maintenant signer chez Renault; distribution de médailles pour tout le monde.
Ce que je ne comprends pas, dans toute cette affaire, c'est pourquoi les réunions de la FIA se font à Paris ou Monaco, et pas à Sarreguemine ou Portage la Prairie (Manitoba). Sur ce, bon week end à tous.

AHL / LAH : la relève en besoin de relève.
On nous serine depuis le début de la saison que la relève est prête à Hamilton pour renforcer à tout moment le Canadien.
Merveilleuse nouvelle, mais les Bulldogs semblent plus encore que le Canadien en besoin urgent de renforts : 7 victoires en 19 matches, 6ème sur 7 dans leur division.
Nul doute que le niveau de jeu y est très relevé; au point que le Canadien serve de club-école aux Bulldogs ?

Le Canadien est béni des dieux : Huet souffre d'une élongation à l'aine, si légère qu'on s'interrogerait presque sur sa réalité.
En tout cas, elle tombe à point : Price prend la relève qu'il devait de toute façon prendre et Halak arrive en renfort.
Si tout se passe bien et Price reste égal à lui-même, c'est-à-dire "sublime" (Pierre Ladouceur; "La Presse"), comment Carbonneau pourrait-il le retirer des buts pour y remettre Huet ? : Huet deviendra gardien numéro 2, mais sans avoir perdu sa place.
Son honneur sera sauf et le Canadien parvenu à ses fins : bien installer Price dans les buts est clairement l'objectif numéro 1 de la saison, beaucoup plus que les séeries éliminatoires, comme si la direction elle-même n'avait jamais cru davantage à son équipe que le "Hockey News".

Si tout se passe bien et Price reste égal à lui-même, c'est-à-dire "sublime" (Pierre Ladouceur; "La Presse"), comment Carbonneau pourrait-il le retirer des buts pour y remettre Huet ? : Huet deviendra gardien numéro 2, mais sans avoir perdu sa place.
Son honneur sera sauf et le Canadien parvenu à ses fins : bien installer Price dans les buts est clairement l'objectif numéro 1 de la saison, beaucoup plus que les séeries éliminatoires, comme si la direction elle-même n'avait jamais cru davantage à son équipe que le "Hockey News".

NHL/LNH : shocking or not shocking ?
The way the Predators ended up winning against the Habs was shocking.
That the Predators ultimately won was not : they overplayed the Habs during 2 out of 3 periods.
The Habs collapse was just good old fair play not to steal the game from their visitors.
That aside, should the Habs lobby the NHL to reduce a game to just 2 periods ?
Why do the Habs collapse in period 3 ? A matter of physical and/or mental preparation ? Or rather that they must overplay themselves during the first 2 ones to get a shot at a win ?
