Euro 2008 : petit, petit, petit...
Le sélectionneur d'une équipe défaite 4-1 pourrait avoir l'élégance, ou au moins l'honnêteté, de s'incliner devant la supériorité de l'adversaire et de le féliciter.
S'il s'appelle Domenech, il préfèrera hurler au "pénalty, pénalty..." (combien en aurait-il fallu pour que la France l'emporte?) et accuser préventivement son vainqueur de vouloir se laisser battre par la Roumanie pour condamner la France et l'Italie.
Il est au-dessus des forces d'un minable de concevoir que certains puissent l'être moins que lui.

Euro 2008 : globalisation.
Upon learning the scorers in the Switzerland-Turkey game were Hakan Yakin, Arda Turan and Semih Senturk and there had been no "auto goal", the casual Montreal sports amateur might have been excused for thinking Switzerland lost 3-0, rather than 2-1.
In the revenge game, four years from now, if the scorers are again called Yakin, Turan and Senturk, who knows, Switzwerland might even win 2-1.

Will the Netherlands try hardest to lose against Romania to bury France and Italy ? Tempting.
Though it could backfire.
You never know, they might face Romania again in the championship final, and lose again, though with a smaller smile: after all, the Portuguese managed to lose twice against Greece, at home, four years ago, and not even Romania can claim to be worse than Greece.
The Dutch may not need to lose to Romania : France and Italy will no doubt do their best -true, their best is not much presently- to give each other the death kiss of a draw.

4-1 contre la France en match officiel et non amical. Depuis quand, me direz-vous, une aussi grosse raclée n'avait pas été reçue? Par qui avait elle été donnée?
Indice 1: c'est un pays defunt qui l'avait administrée.
Indice 2: le score fut alors de 5 à 1.
Indice 3: à l'époque, le footeux de ce pays s'exportait déjà partout en Europe.
Indice 4: à l'époque, un joueur allemand fort connu avait dit que, compte tenu de son niveau technique, le footeux français était le mieux payé d'Europe.

La précédente cuisante défaite datait du 26 juin 1958, 5-2 contre le Brésil. Sinon, il faut retourner avant guerre.
En match amical, la Pologne a collé un 4-0 à la France à Paris le 31 août 1982.
Bref, on va desosser de l'astrologue dans la presse hexagonale. Le mage avait-il vu venir ce coup là?

Euro 2008 : past performance is no guarantee of future performance.
Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain shone brightly in their first Euro 2008 game ?
If past History is any indication, pick the championship ultimate winner somewhere else.
As the perennial first game underachievers, the Italians have overdone themselves ; expect them to sail past Romania on an ugly goal and steal their way into the quarter finals and then...
Also note that Germany was prompt to correct the initial positive impression the team gave : their defeat against Croatia tends to prove the Germans could be, after all, serious contenders.
Portugal's pathetic impatience at reaching the quarter finals sadly confirms their neverending immaturity and that the rule of the Championship game still eludes them. Expect them to be at their usual ugly worst when they realise they were again picked up as suckers.
